2012 Resolutions Girl

Surprisingly, I have kept up with most of my 2012 resolutions. Remember the Shopping Ban that I started January 4th? I have successfully completed my first month of no shopping for myself for clothes, shoes & accessories. I haven't bough anything actually. Not even anything for the house. It has been surprisingly easy. I did get suckered into looking at the Old Navy website and about threw my laptop across the room when I saw that one of their aztec sweaters was on sale. This aztec sweater I got before the ban ended up not being the one I chose and I have been disappointed ever since.

Other resolutions like, eating healthier, paying attention to skin care, dressing up at least twice a week and working out on the elliptical at least twice a week have been going really well. Losing weight, which is a constant battle, has been my hardest. Last year at this time I was on Weight Watchers and ended up losing 15 pounds by summer but quickly gained it back when I stopped counting points. I wanted this year to be a lifestyle change. I just couldn't see myself counting points for food for the rest of my life. I really wanted to be able to do this on my own. So far, I've only lost 5 pounds but it's better than nothing.

I have failed at getting to work on time. I did really well for one week and now I have been 10 minutes late twice this week.

I also wanted to complete one project a month and since we're only one month into the year, I am glad to say I've got one project down! I made this scarf and now I am starting on a pom pom wreath. I am almost finished.

I am pushing myself to try one new recipe a month. Last night I tried this roasted cauliflower recipe and it was very, very good. Even the teenager liked it. Whoa dude.

I had another unspoken resolution that has been the biggest struggle. I mean a battle. Used to, my fiance was the only one that knew about it but I made the decision to tell my mom and my best friend. It really helps to have that extra encouragement and the prayers that are coming in. I already have a volunteer date at the Animal Shelter with my bestie coming up very soon!

One DIY project down! I picked up some scrap fabric at the Goodwill like foreverrr ago. I finally got around to stitching it up into a scarf shape of some sort. I did it by hand because I still haven't taken my sewing class yet. I tought myself all the way up to...pushing the fabric through. It got jammed and I haven't revisited again. Fail. I was suppose to go to a friends house a few weekends back but ended up getting a cold and had to stay home. One of my new year resolutions was to make one project a month and so far I am good!

When it comes to facebook, is honesty the best policy?

If you're too honest then are you a drama queen? If you're too happy are you fake? Too negative? Too positive?

In the last couple of weeks I've heard differing opinions. One person sees too much negativity and wants to delete her account. Fair enough. Another person thinks everyone's life is too picture perfect and is fake. Which is it?

I like being honest. But I have held back before from posting a negative status. Does anyone want to hear that? Does it matter? Then there are times I have posted a negative status and have gotten lots of support from friends and family in return.

Is facebook just a place to make others think your life is perfect or do you run the risk of being honest and get labeled a Negative Nelly? Furthermore, does it even matter?

I have come close to deleting my facebook account several times. One time I remember was after I got "deleted". Twice! Sheesh. This wasn't even a phrase 5 years ago! Getting deleted. That will make you feel like a loser. I thought to myself, "Why am I doing this? Why am I reliving high school all over again like when I got picked on for wearing thrifted clothes?" Came very close to canceling the whole bit. Nothing like getting reminded that that person you had a riff with in high school became your friend on facebook only to delete you months later after you thought you have re-established a friendship. Wrong. Something as silly - and I mean silly - as that can make you feel like there is something wrong with you.

So, do you let it all out and run the risk of everyone seeing how crazy, quirky, sad, happy you are or do you just keep it on an even keel so everyone thinks you're normal?

Boy, wearing this slip exposed threw some people for a loop! I had a few women tell me that my slip was showing and one guy said he didn't know if my skirt was too short or my slip was too long! Ha! I had people scratching their heads with this one. I just really love the lace detail on the slip and thought it added a lot of romance to this outfit. It ended up being one of my favorites outfits! I can't wait to give it a try in the summer too with a flowy sleeveless top. I think that will look dreamy and feminine.

Now let's don't wear all of this together at one time (unless all your friends have had five martinis already and everyone thinks they can dance like Lady Gaga) and burn someone's eyeballs out. Instead, just choose one for a special night OR, even better, choose one for daytime and tone it down with denim. I have a serious addiction to sequins you guys. Even wore them to a Christmas party last year but didn't get any good pictures. The photobooth at the party...well...let's just say he wasn't the best photographer. But the sequins took the whole event up several notches!

There, after all the swearing, I do have to come to grips with the fact at some point in time this year, I will have to frighten the living daylights out of some people and wear a bathing suit. Eggnog Eclair

It's a little late for eggnog, I know, but I decided to make the Eggnog Eclair recipe on the side of the Nilla wafer box. It's not really that eggnog-y. It's more like a rich nutmeg-y pudding. Anyway, it's a nice refreshment.

I followed the recipe on the box....it's pretty simple. I mixed the milk, cream cheese, nutmeg, rum extract and instant vanilla pudding. Line the loaf pan with plastic wrap and then lay down a layer of wafers. Mix in some cool whip with the pudding mixture and use that in between wafers. Once you're done, put it in the fridge for 3 hours.

Time to make the (easiest ever) chocolate sauce! Mix two baking squares in with the rest of the cool whip and heat for 25 seconds in the microwave. I had to put it back in for another 10 seconds after I stirred it for a bit. Invert the cake out of the loaf pan and pull off the plastic wrap.

Spoon on the chocolate sauce. Stop yourself before you devour it and add 3 wafers for decoration.

Now go for it!

I ordered this sweater off of Ebay and had ordered a rust color. But I ended up with this tan, orange and navy. I decided to embrace the navy. Ain't no use hatin' on navy. I emailed the seller and was all like "either I'm color blind or British people have a different idea of what the color rust is". They were super nice and gave me 50% of the price back because I didn't want to have to pack it back up and mail it all the way across the pond. So, even though you can't really tell, the sweater is navy, not black. Anyway. I still want the rust colored one but the shopping ban is causing a bit of a barrier in solving that problem. It will just go on the list for next year!

I heard this poem being read this morning on the radio and it really struck me - especially about the part where the new year is a "calendar with every day uncrossed". Each day is an opportunity. I don't want to get all sappy and on a soap box about blah blah every minute and blah blah be happy all the time. It's more about experiencing your day. As a whole. I don't have to feel pressured to treasure every minute but I do need to LEARN and GROW from my DAYS. Because my days are numbered. I get reminded of this a lot when I am around my son. Especially when he is hugging me and telling me he loves me just out of the clear blue. A little thought sometimes pops in my head and tells me that one day, he will be an adult and won't be able to fit in my lap and may forget to tell me he loves me for months on end. That's the little moments. I don't necessarily need to cherish when I go to the coffee pot at work to get a refill. So that old "treasure each and every moment" is too much. Too much pressure. Too much to do. Makes me feel like I am failing. I prefer to look at the calendar, see the days are uncrossed, see the field of snow without a single footprint and begin the journey. This online journal is an outlet that has helped and is going to continue to help me document things that happen each day, things that don't, things that do, people that I love and people that love me. So hey, from me, to you and here's hoping you will have a great (althought sometimes stressful, crazy, uneventful, loving, intense, boring) day!!!

Spent Saturday afternoon hanging around town and grabbing some lunch at the Ale House. We went back home and watched Contagion (which was really good) and later that night, grilled some steaks. It was really funny - I think more funny because it reminded me of Asheville so much! But after a couple episodes I was ready to move on. I followed the directions that Danielle put up on her website. She makes it very easy! It's just felt, yarn and a hot glue gun. You can use one of the straw wreaths (keep the plastic wrap on) or you can use the styrofoam ones too. Small, large, whatever!

Remember When and Now What

Remember last year when I got engaged? Well, I'm still engaged. Thankfully! BUT we still need to plan a wedding. We have both have come up with great ideas but as with most of my ideas, unless I win the lottery or a rich uncle turns up dead and has left me as sole heir, it probably ain't gonna happen. (I've checked the family tree and let's just say...it's not made of money).

Option 1: Have a modest wedding in town.

Option 2: Have a modest wedding out of town.

Option 3: Get married at the courthouse and just have a party! Woot!

Option 3: Get married at the courthouse and run off on an immediate honeymoon.

Option 4: Run off and get married and do the honeymoon all at the same time = Eloping.

We are leaning towards option #4. This will be marriage number two for both of us so the big elaborate wedding is just not going to happen. It's definitely not something I want to go through again. A bit too stressful and expensive if you know what I mean. That's where the modest wedding comes in. We've toyed around with backyards, parks, and cute places around town. The reception always stumps us. We've toyed with the idea of going to the beach and getting married on the beach. Little did we know that is cray-cray expensive! Sheesh. And the burden to have to drive 4 hours away wasn't really what we wanted to do to friends and family. Our desire to "go somewhere" wasn't quieted, though. We have narrowed it down and we have come up with a place we can go that is not too far away and sounds like a good time. After watching an Anthony Bourdain "No Reservations" episode when he was in New Orleans we were hooked. And NO, not hooked on Mardi Gras and all that bead, spring break, blah, blah, crap. Just the historical, gritty, jazz New Orleans with down home food and parts of town you just don't go to.

The Big Easy.

Fingers crossed! This isn't set in stone and probably have no idea what I'm getting myself into. I did survive a trip to NYC and had a great time to boot so New Orleans seems like a definite possibility! If you've got any pointers, feel free to let me know.

I see it as a great adventure with my soulmate. I'm ready for blues, jazz, cajun food and hot sticky weather. We definitely need to save up so it may happen this year, maybe next. We don't want to make this a burden to go. It needs to be an adventure with no financial regrets. We also toyed with the idea of riding one of these down:

But it got a little expensive. It would be a 15 hour ride there and a 15 hour ride back. I just don't think we have the time for that. We'll see! It's all up in the air so we want to have options open. I have heard people hating their train experience and saying they will never travel railway again. I don't know. I'm the kind of person that will watch the movie that got the really bad reviews and end up liking it. Who knows. I am a bit of a geek so I might just love it!

NO BUYING CLOTHES OR SHOES FOR MYSELF

Really. I have not told anyone else this but it's something I have been toying with since I read about Miss Vinyl Ahoy doing a shopping ban and got super excited thinking, "Yeah! I could totally do that too!" Yeah. Right. Well, it's a bit unexpected to hear this from me but it's got to be done.

Rules:

Pretty darn basic. Don't buy clothes for myself. See something I like? Good. That's all that's gonna happen. Oh, and don't think I'm going to try to sneak a belt or a bag or a hairbow in. Nope. None.
Don't buy any shoes for myself. But what about that nice pair of brown...NO! Stop it. (slaps face)
I am allowed to buy things for the house. And of course regular old things like groceries and stuff that like I need to survive...like toilet paper and hairspray, of course. Although a toilet paper hairspray dress could possibly work for date night....Maybe not
If I get a gift card for let's say, being the best girlfriend ever, I can use the gift card for whatever I want to BUT only for the amount on the gift card. Is sales tax going to make it go over the gift card balance? Well then too bad sucka! Put it back. Walk out of the store or in my case, take the finger off the mouse.
I highly doubt I'm even going to get a gift card so #4 is basically useless. Nonetheless, at least you can call me out on it if you see me in Target trying to hide between the clothing racks.
This Shopping Ban starts: 12:00 AM Wednesday, January 4th and ends July 4th 2011! Independence Day! Independent of my fashion addiction! WOW! (Actually, I just now saw that it ended on July 4th and I was trying to make it all patriotic but that's not how it started out. Darn it. If I could only be more enlighted like that it would've been pretty cool.)

Anyway, there you have it. That's the rules and I have to stick to them. Feel free to remind me of them at any time. I can't guarantee what I will say back to you, but there is a possibility that it could be a good conversation. Probably 80/20. More like 50/50.

This post is a little ADD because we took some photos in front of this tile wall and then over by the trees. I was torn as to which one to use and then I was like...WAIT...use them both! HA! My momma always said I was special...

After "Photo Session 2011" was over we took off to run errands and grab some lunch. We love Hannah Flannigan's Pub downtown so we decided to stop by there. Oh! Here's my new (old) Buffalo tote bag! Look! Excitement!

After lunch we took off to Big Lots for browsing but ended up with tons of crap in our buggy. But we did find a awesome mirror for the bathroom. We weren't really planning on it but we didn't want to put the old mirror back up (ugly thing it was) and the one at Big Lots was only $25! After that we stopped by Tyson's furniture so Brian could daydream about a recliner. We got lost browsing all around and got lost in our wishing and hoping. Dropping In

Hi all! I am still alive.....just digging out from Christmas-o-rama. I can't lie and say I'm sad it's over. I am glad I survived another year! Brian and I already have some plans for next year and how we can try to save some money instead of ending up with pockets turned out after Santa hits the road. We've got some good ideas and I think we can do it. It would be so awesome to put some money back so we can all take a really nice summer vacation instead of more tangible gifts to unwrap just to turn around and have to find a place to stuff it in the closet. Speaking of intangible gifts, my mom got me one of the best ones ever. A free extreme house cleaning!!! And my future mother-in-law and stepson got started on a bathroom makeover which included stripping wallpaper that was basically crazy glued on. Brian just finished putting a second coat of paint on today so I will have some pictures soon! Me, being the ditz I am, forgot to take before pictures. Meh. Bottom line? It's DONE! Those are really the best kind of gifts ya know? So, yeah, got some notes for next year.

Sorry for the lack of outfit posts. I have been super lazy this week and it doesn't help that the dress code at work is jeans. Almost every day has been tshirt and jeans for me. Which is fine and dandy but I've also been cramming my hair into a twisty bun and minimal makeup.

Minimal makeup + bad hair + sloppy clothes = One Bad Photo

But I will be back on track - maybe even tomorrow! I found some great stuff at the Salvation Army and they will be fresh out of the dryer tonight so I can throw them on tomorrow and over the weekend. Yippie. That will give this ol' stale blog some fresh blood.

Anyway, have a great rest of the week and get ready for the new year! It's going to be a good one for me. I am going to make it a good one by golly!

We got the littlest tree in the world, I know! But it's just right for us this year. It's a tree that we picked up, threw on the roof of my little car, carried in easily and it was upright in no time. The best part: no furniture rearranging! Yes! Another big plus was that it was small enough for my son to help decorate. Actually, he did 90% of tree decorating. I helped with the lights and garland. It feels like a homespun tree. I got some popcorn and cranberries so we can make some homemade garland. One of the main reasons I cringe at Christmas time is that I know that dreaded feeling of being overwhelmed is right around the corner. While my son and I were digging around in all of the decorations out of the many, many boxes, I mumbled "Christmas" in my best Scrooge voice. Before I could go any farther my son finished my sentence for me and said "is so much fun!" Whoa mom. Had to check myself in that moment. Christmas is the best time of the year for a kid. Before they become tarnished with all the commercialism, people pleasing and debt associated with it as an adult.

This year I took the initiative to not put any unneeded pressure on myself or my family. We are not planning a big party (like last year), I am not decorating to the max (like last year) and the kids presents have already been bought and paid for (unlike the last minute shopping last year). I'm hoping all of this combined together will help. No need to get stressed out at one of the most special times of the year, right silly?!

We noticed a bit of a fuss down by the railroad tracks one day while we were coming back from the flea market. Curiosity got the best of us so we pulled over and headed down to see what was going on. After checking things out a bit, it didn't seem to be much more than just a passenger train that had stopped for rest. There was a tent, a buffet and lots of people with name tags on with cameras. Hmmm. I can't really find anything more about it online. If you know anything about it, it would be great to solve the mystery!

Brian and I took a crisp morning stroll around Owen lake. It must have been National Geographic Day because there were all kinds of things going on - water foul wise. I was a total geek about it and took a bunch of pictures. Josie came with us and although she could care less about the ducks, geese and a crane, she still enjoyed a breath of fresh air. Just don't expect to go on a walk with her that doesn't involved stopping every five seconds to smell random things in the grass.

DIY: Earring Display

Are you ready for THE easiest craft ever? Look no further.

Here's what happened. I ended up with a huge amount of lace someone gave to me. I kept it around thinking, one day I'll find something to do with this black lace with gold flowers. Yeah! Well, I got tired of waiting around for ME to have a wonderful idea so I scoured the internet for lace project ideas. Bingo! Found a super easy way to use lace for a good cause. Or at least a good gift.

Get one of those embroidery ring thingies. Cut out a piece of lace. Put it in the circle. Tighten the screw. Trim excess. DONE.

Great gift to give for someone who loves earrings but keeps them all piled in a box or tray. Those puppies need to be on display!

Special Dinner with the Sweetheart

A most delicious Thai meal shared with my sweetheart at a little restaurant downtown. Thai is definitely one of my all time favorites. Everything was sooo very tasty. I don't know if it was because we hadn't had it in a while or if the moon and stars were aligned just right. Either way, it was hands down one of the the best meals I have had in a long time.

Fur Boots Girl (With a DIY)

I had a terribly old pair of plain, knee high brown boots that hadn't seen the light of day in years. Years! I got the idea to redesign them sometime last year when ankle boots started popping up everywhere. I had been scoping out faux fur on the internet, at the fabric shop and craft stores. I never could find exactly what I wanted. The fabric shop was waaay to expensive. Then this little light bulb went off one day at the Goodwill when I ran across a great faux fur vest that was too big for me to wear. Ah ha!! Hack it to pieces and glue it to those boring old boots! I got a lot of stares at work but all positive comments although I think some people thought I had two squirrels around my ankles. I made barking and growling noises just to throw them off. At least they are fun to wear and only cost $12 to make - no real commitment!

This isn't a step-by-step how to or anything because I basically winged it the whole way! But I started out with a cheap pair of boots, and old skinny belt, and a thrifted vest:

I cut the belt to where I could wrap it and tie it around each boot

I cut off about 4 inches off the top of each boot, folded it down and hot glued the fur on. The fur strips I cut were about 6 inches long and about 4 inches wide. Like I said, I didn't know if this was going to work so I just kept on trimming until I got it the length and width I wanted it. It was a bit messy so I cut the fur outside. I wrapped the belt around and tied a knot on the inside. You don't really need the belt, but I thought it added a bit of interest.

A Day at the Farm Girl

We went to visit a friend that was house sitting for a couple that have a small farm. Chickens, roosters, a million dogs (maybe nine, I think) and two horses. Oh, and one adorable cat. We had a great time grilling out and cracking open some growlers from the local brewery. The horses were very friendly and so was the cat. But one small disaster happened when one of the chickens got chased into the dog pen by our dog (not used to chickens) and got a little love tap from one of the huskies (their dog). I freaked out and froze! Thank God my friend came running because I didn't know how to get a dog to stop kissing the chicken. At least I like to think they were just kissing. The chicken was ok. Just lost a couple of feathers. But I felt like a loser since I didn't pull a superman move and save the day. Farm girl I am not.

DIY: Baby is Sleeping Wreath

After seeing Danielle make these wreaths on her blog Take Heart, I thought I would give it a try. She made it sound so easy! My wonderful friend Katie is expecting her first baby very soon so I thought this would be a great first wreath. I know how important it is to not disturb that precious little baby snoozing away so I thought this would be a nice way to say "Don't you dare turn that doorknob one inch".

On the other side is a happy "Baby is Awake"! Meaning, you probably don't even have time to turn the sign around and you longingly look at the "Baby is sleeping" side and wonder when the next time that will ever be.

Trouble With the Trend

Very rarely do I not like a new fashion trend. But there is just something about the new slipper trend that I can't quite put my finger on...I just don't think I like it. What do you think?

By the way...Here is the LAST trend that I truly hated and knew right away that I hated it with a passion:

HAREM PANTS! Or what I like to call "When-CVS-is-out-of-Depends-pants". Ugh!

I guess these kind of fashion risks are what separates the women from the girls. And also why I will never be famous. Or a writer, for that matter, because I start every other sentence with the word "And".

The pros about the slipper is that they are comfortable.

The cons are...they make me think of Hugh Hefner.

Remember that show? Party of Five? I loved it. It was right in my line up of watching 90210 and Melrose Place. Don't judge ya'll. I feel a little bit like a walk-on character in this outfit. I love this dress - it works on so many different levels. I wear it in the summer time with sandals and now it has flowed right on into being my fall go to skirt.
